CADline Helps Lewisham Address the Issue

Despite the proliferation of text, email and other electronic forms of communication, our postal address is still a vital piece of our identity. When banks or other institutions get it wrong – maybe by leaving off complete lines or a house number, it’s annoying and can lead to key documents being lost or misdirected. However, things can get even more serious if the emergency services or police have wrong or incomplete data.

It is also important for local authorities to have reliable information about their borough or town – not just about the houses and businesses they are responsible for, but also for land parcels and assets such as bus shelters. For this reason, for the last 12 months, local government offices have needed to comply with the latest BS7666 2006 standard for the representation of address management, in particular with reference to gazetteers.

Pozzoni Puts Sustainability at the Heart of its Designs – With the Help of Revit Architecture

Older, well-established firms often have a tendency to rest on their laurels, making a feature of their traditional values and being resistent to new ideas and change. Not so the Altrincham, Cheshire based architectural practice Pozzoni.

Pozzoni makes a point of being forward thinking, of taking on board new ideas and of maintaining its reputation as a firm with a very human face. For example, it was the first architects’ practice in the UK to become an Investor in People.

Don’t Underestimate the Power of Training

Claire Bass of CADline, Autodesk Premier Solutions Provider, explains how a continuing programme can help maximise your investment in CAD.

It’s been said that we are in the third age of CAD. The first was when we relinquished the drawing board for the computer screen and 2D automated drafting. This then evolved – for the second stage – into 3D design and the first steps towards building information modelling (BIM).

Back to the Future

Had they been able to glimpse into the future, many architects of the 1960s would have been pained to discover that their brave new vision of modern living would be seen, a mere 40 years later, as brutalist social housing, unsuited to the needs of 21st Century living and condemned to dereliction.

Happily for them, urban renewal has become a key part of the architectural repertoire over the last twenty years and perhaps unparalleled amongst its proponents is a firm which was itself founded in the 1960s, north London-based Levitt Bernstein. Acknowledged leaders in the field of urban renewal, Levitt Bernstein’s environmental, social and economically sustainable approach to design has been recognised by numerous awards – including Regeneration Architect of the Year in 2006 – and it was shortlisted for the RIBA Sustainability Award in the same year.

Inventor Helps MERU Teach Babies to Drive

Design software plays key role in development of innovative powered wheelchair

Young children aged between around one and five are constantly on the move. They are always crawling, toddling, running, falling and learning about the world through mobility. Imagine, therefore, what it is like for children of this age with disabilities. Too young for conventional powered wheelchairs, they run the risk of missing out totally on key stages of development because they cannot independently explore, play and communicate through movement.

Autodesk Revit Building

Driven by the move towards collaborative working among clients, architectural practice MRP has adopted a formal policy to switch from Bentley MicroStation to Autodesk products. It is currently standardising on AutoCAD® throughout the partnership - and is also carrying out an in-depth evaluation of Autodesk® Revit®.

The purchase of 126 seats of AutoCAD and 59 of AutoCAD LT® (all replacing Microstation) means there will no longer be compatibility issues when exchanging DWG files between other architects and subcontractors, who predominately use AutoCAD or AutoCAD-based software.

MRP is currently undertaking a major review of its CAD standards and processes. "Once the standards are implemented, everyone will be working on the same platform at all of our offices. That action alone will generate considerable savings," says Mark Simpson, MRP IT manager.
